The purpose of a portfolio is to show what you are capable of; it helps you in interviews if you were to apply for an art course in college, art based jobs etc. A portfolio needs to be organised as it shows your commitment and care for your work; it also makes it easier for someone to look at your work. It can contain anything that represents you as an individual, it can show people your creative and technical skills, it should have your favourite pieces of work you have done and should look neat.

In an interview people would want to see experimentation, what you have come up with by yourself and your skill. Your drawings should contain evidence of primary research and a variety of techniques which you use to draw. A range of ideas is important in a portfolio as this shows your creativity. You must also have confidence in your work and should put effort into it, this will stand out in your portfolio.

You need a substantial amount of research in your portfolio to understand what it's about, also include annotations and illustrations, you should explain what your drawings are, whether they are landscapes, portraits, pen and ink drawing etc. Your work also needs to be unique and contain your own work, don't copy someone else's ideas. Invention is also a way of letting others know that you have skill when it comes to creating your own ideas.

A portfolio promotes you and shows your capabilities, you can also have an online portfolio which further shows your commitment and confidence in your work. Your portfolio should make an interviewer understand your interests and your personality, you should put in what you think stands out and represents you.

You need a wide variety of ideas and skills that can make your portfolio look good, you can use the portfolio to describe your favourite bits of art and why you are interested in art.
